Sending Out the Seventy

1 After this, the Lord appointed 70 ^{▼▼Other mss read 72} others, and He sent them ahead of Him in pairs to every town and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 He told them: ^b “The harvest ^c is abundant, but the workers ^d are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest. ^e 3 Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves. ^f 4 Don’t carry a money-bag, ^g traveling bag, ^h or sandals; ⁱ don’t greet anyone along the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace ^j to this household.’ 6 If a son of peace ^{▼▼A peaceful person; one open to the message of the kingdom} is there, your peace ^l will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. ^m Don’t be moving from house to house. 8 When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you. ⁿ 9 Heal the sick ^o who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God ^p has come near ^q you.’ 10 When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We are wiping off as a witness against you ^r even the dust of your town that clings to our feet. Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, on that day ^s it will be more tolerable for Sodom ^t than for that town. ^u

Unrepentant Towns

13 “Woe ^v to you, ^w Chorazin! ^x Woe to you, Bethsaida! ^y For if the miracles ^z that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, ^aa they would have repented long ago, sitting in ^{▼▼sackcloth: Garment made of poor quality material and worn as a sign of grief and mourning}sackcloth and ashes! ^ac 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment ^ad than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, ^ae will you be exalted to heaven? ^af No, you will go down to ^{▼▼Hades: The Greek word for the place of the dead; it corresponds to the Hebrew word Sheol.}Hades! ^ah 16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me. ^ai Whoever rejects you rejects Me. ^aj And whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” ^ak

The Return of the Seventy

18 He said to them, “I watched Satan ^aq fall from heaven like a lightning flash. ^ar 19 Look, I have given you the authority ^as to trample ^at on snakes ^au and scorpions ^av and over all the power of the enemy; ^aw nothing will ever harm you. ^ax 20 However, don’t rejoice that ^{▼▼Lit don’t rejoice in this, that} the spirits ^az submit to you, ^ba but rejoice that your names are written ^bb in heaven.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 Just ^br then an expert in the law ^bs stood up to test ^bt Him, saying, “Teacher, ^bu what must I do to inherit eternal life?” ^bv

26 “What is written in the law?” He asked him. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered:

Love the Lord your God ^bw with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; ^bx and your neighbor as yourself. ^{by

28 “You’ve answered correctly,” He told him. “Do this and you will live.” ^ca

29 But wanting to justify himself, ^cb he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” ^cc

30 Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a ^{▼▼Samaritan(s): People of mixed, Gentile/ Jewish ancestry who lived between Galilee and Judea and were hated by the Jews}Samaritan ^ce on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. ^cf 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil ^cg and wine. Martha and Mary
